Jean-Philippe Piter was born in Dakar in 1968. At the age of 16 Jean-Philippe left Sénégal and moved to France to study photography. After completing his studies Jean-Philippe served as an assistant to some of the biggest names in the photography industry such as Michel Comte (my personal favorite), Dominique Isserman, Jacques Dirand and Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Jean-Philippe has shot for AD, Citizen K, Vanity Fair, W, PHOTO, Numero, Vogue UK and many others. Known for black and white portraits that are uncomplicated and sensitive, Jean-Philippe’s lens has seduced celebrities like Queen Rania of Jordan, Giorgio Armani, Brian Ferry and Nicole Kidman.
In 1997 Jean-Philippe moved to the caribbean island of St. Barthélemy. It is on this island that he published a magazine of which he is the founder, creative director and feature photographer. “Pure”, out later this month, showcases his work every year and the magazines name sums up his personal attitude about his publication.
Below are a few of my favorite images. Be sure to swing by the Clic Gallery in SoHo to get a copy of his latest magazine PURE.
